Marisol Rubio is a former scientific researcher and current health care provider and advocate for high-need students. A second-generation American, Marisol was raised by a single mother who was provided the opportunity to become a public school teacher and taught Marisol to always fight for a better future for her entire community. Marisol had her first job at the age of 12 and has never forgotten the lessons she learned as a child who wasn’t sure where the next meal would come from.

Marisol experienced the unimaginable when her infant daughter was diagnosed with brain cancer. If not for Marisol’s tireless advocacy on her daughter’s behalf against an unresponsive and dismissive health care system, her daughter would likely not have survived. Through that experience, Marisol saw firsthand the problems in our health care system and the importance of providing quality, affordable health care for all.

August 1996

After her recovery from cancer, Marisol’s daughter experienced cognitive deficits that she has been able to overcome. Marisol took her experience as a scientist and advocate for her daughter to fight for others, working as a Bilingual science teacher, special education tutor, health promotion officer and disability student advisor.

A single mom and an advocate for those without a voice, Marisol has consistently dedicated her limited free time to advocate for our community. Whether it’s working to protect the environment, create new green jobs, strengthen gun safety measures, provide affordable, quality health care, solve our housing crisis or assist people with disabilities Marisol has been a champion for this district.

March 2019

Marisol has developed deep roots in the community as an elected delegate to the Democratic National Convention and SEIU Local 2015 member. Now, with her daughter in college, Marisol is ready to take her lifelong commitment to advocacy and helping others to the State Senate, where she will be a champion for working families and the most vulnerable members of our community.

Marisol has a B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley and majored in Molecular and Cell Biology with an emphasis in Neurobiology and was the recipient of the P.E.O. Women’s Leadership Award. She currently lives in San Ramon with her daughter, who is a student at Diablo Valley College.
