I'm Marisol Rubio and I am running to be your State Senator in District 7. Thank you for taking the time to learn more about me and my campaign.
My political activism began as a young single mother of a chronically-ill disabled daughter who is an early childhood brain cancer survivor. Through my experiences fighting to not just keep my daughter alive, but also watch her thrive into adulthood, I learned how little support there is for the disabled community and their caretakers. Helping children rehabilitate from traumatic brain injury (TBI) and seeing that their primary caregivers receive adequate socioeconomic support is the personal passion that led me here.
While at UC, Berkeley, I majored in Molecular and Cell Biology with an emphasis in Neurobiology and I supplemented my core requirements with a series of psychology, sociology, economics, and public health courses in order to better understand how TBI impacts a child’s cognitive function and their family’s overall quality of life. My empirical knowledge combined with my formal education and experience as a bilingual science teacher has helped me identify alternative metacognitive approaches to learning after injury and how we can best support families experiencing this exceptional hardship so that they, in turn, can provide the best care for their special needs child.
Public health researchers have demonstrated time again that, in order to develop effective community-based policies, outreach programs and those shaping public policy must consult with individuals who not only have the academic and professional background, but who also inherently understand the psycho-socioeconomic needs of their target community. Given the opportunity to serve as a your State Senator, I will to utilize my professional, academic, and personal insight to introduce and to advance innovative and proven healthcare, educational, and socioeconomic policies. I can serve as a direct link between public policy and the target community to develop effective, sound resolutions that address the complex needs of our most vulnerable Californians.
Thank you again for your time and consideration.
WHY I AM RUNNING
Our state and district is facing a range of issues that are holding back our best and brightest from being successful and having families, our extreme levels of income inequality is forcing too many Californians to live below poverty level, and we continue to allow crimes against nature, like fracking, that is destroying our clean air, water, and soil.
Over and over, we repeat how California is the 5th largest economy in the entire world, and yet we cannot overcome our problems with homelessness, our public schools are among the lowest in the nation for money spent per pupil, and we are continuing to suffer from an unhealthy environment as we move towards a completely renewable energy system at a glacial pace.
My commitment to you is that I will go to Sacramento and fight for accountability from our legislature and for our biggest and wealthiest corporations to pay their fair share so we can give a hand-up to the blue-collar working people of California and their future!
